MOTS-C
A 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA, studied for metabolic regulation, exercise mimetic properties, and longevity research.
What Is MOTS-C?
MOTS-C (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a mitochondria-derived peptide encoded by the mitochondrial genome. Discovered by Dr. Changhan David Lee’s research group at USC, MOTS-C represents a relatively new class of signaling molecules. Published research has shown MOTS-C activates AMPK, a master metabolic regulator, and has been described as an “exercise mimetic.”
History
MOTS-C was discovered in 2015 by Dr. Changhan David Lee and colleagues at the University of Southern California Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. The peptide was identified through computational analysis of the mitochondrial genome, revealing previously unrecognized open reading frames encoding bioactive peptides. The discovery of MOTS-C and its sister peptide humanin opened an entirely new field of research into mitochondria-derived peptides (MDPs) as intercellular signaling molecules. Subsequent research demonstrated MOTS-C’s role in metabolic regulation, exercise physiology, and aging.
Certificate of Analysis (COA)
Every batch of our peptides is independently tested by third-party laboratories to verify purity, identity, and potency. We maintain 98%+ purity standards across our entire product catalog.
Reconstitution & Storage
Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water (BAC water). Using a sterile syringe, slowly inject 1-2mL of BAC water into the vial, directing the stream against the glass wall. Do not inject directly onto the lyophilized powder. Gently swirl until fully dissolved. Do not shake.
Store unreconstituted vials at room temperature away from direct sunlight. After reconstitution, store at 2-8°C (standard refrigerator). Use within 30 days of reconstitution. Do not freeze.
For research purposes only.

MOTS-C
Frequently Asked Questions
What is MOTS-C?
A 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA. Discovered in 2015 by Dr. Lee at USC. Represents mitochondria-derived signaling molecules regulating nuclear gene expression and metabolism.
What does MOTS-C do?
Activates AMPK (master metabolic regulator). Published studies show effects on glucose uptake, fatty acid oxidation, insulin sensitivity, and exercise-like metabolic responses.
What is MOTS-C peptide used for?
AMPK activation, exercise physiology, glucose uptake, insulin sensitivity, mitochondrial-nuclear signaling, and aging/healthspan research in preclinical models.
What does MOTS-C peptide do?
Signals between mitochondria and nucleus via AMPK pathways. Reynolds et al. (2021, Nature Communications) documented its role as an exercise-induced regulator of physical decline.
Where to buy MOTS-C?
Protocol Aminos: 10mg liquid vial for $55. Third-party tested at 98%+ purity with batch-specific COA. Free shipping over $150.
Does the product come with instructions?
Each order includes product documentation with storage requirements and handling guidelines. For research guidance, visit our blog at /blog.
What's the actual amount in each vial?
Each vial contains the labeled amount of MOTS-C in liquid form. The exact quantity is verified via third-party testing and documented on the batch-specific Certificate of Analysis.
Are additional supplies needed?
No. All Protocol Aminos products ship in liquid form, ready for immediate research use. No additional preparation, mixing, or supplies required.
How long does a vial last?
Shelf life depends on storage conditions. Store refrigerated at 2–8°C, away from direct light, and keep sealed when not in use. Specific stability data is available on request.
